Musician’s Vision Problems by Stephen Tighe

As musicians, we have spent years developing our skills and we have a real love and a passion for what we do. Then one day we start to notice we are having real problems. This applies to players and conductors alike. It can be quite frightening, for our music making can seem to be in jeopardy and we feel a bit lost and very concerned, that it might bring our musical careers to an unwelcome and premature end.

How do we solve the problem of our vision deteriorating as we get older? There IS a solution in most cases. The problem is that you know the problem, but your optician doesn’t understand, although theoretically, they should be able to devise a solution. After many visits to your optician, having tried either bifocals or varifocals there still seems to be too many compromises with vision quality. It doesn’t have to be like that…

The above is possibly how you see the world currently when playing. You may have invested in varifocal lenses in your spectacles, but they don’t help you read the music and keep the conductor in sharp focus too. Also, what if you have to march and play?
