Bifocal lenses provide a cost effective and convenient way to combine two working distances in one lens. Although not as cosmetically appealing as a varifocal lens, bifocal lenses are functional and simple to use.

If you require clear vision for distance, close-up for reading and for mid or intermediate ranges (computer use, or playing music) a bifocal lens can provide a cost effective solution.

As we age our vision starts to weaken, this is a completely natural process. Between the ages of 40 to 45, our eyes lenses lose their elasticity and our ability to focus at close distance begins to diminish. This means that we can no longer change our focus between near and far objects as well, reading becomes more strenuous, and close work such as sewing can become problematic.

For those of us who would like to maintain an enjoyment of reading or be able to read the menu or fine print with ease will find high-quality reading glasses to be the optimum solution. It is the easiest way to compensate for this reduction in focusing known as presbyopia. If an additional visual defect arises for far vision, then the best advice is to use progressive glasses.

However the most cost effective option to avoid two pairs of glasses is to try bifocals as they provide clear vision at two different distances. We would always advise considering varifocals too, as these avoid the visible line on your lenses which some wearers find distracting and the give clear intermediate vision (useful for car dashboard or computer) as well as distance and reading clarity.
