The 3D OCT Scanner or 3D Optical Coherence Tomography system (3D OCT) was previously only used in hospital eye clinics.

OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography, or it is sometimes called Ocular Coherence Tomography. It is a complex technology used to measure the eye and particularly the layers of the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive area at the back of the eye.
A 3D OCT scan is similar to an MRI or CAT scan for the eyes. It is similar to an ultrasound scan but uses light rather than sound to look through the retina layers, giving us a 3D view of the inside of your eye. Our OCT scanner can image in 3D, allowing our optometrists to see, sometimes for the first time, problems within your eye that could not easily be seen before. With an OCT scan, we can literally see through the surface into the layers beneath, which tells us so much more and can help prevent loss of vision if changes are spotted early.

An OCT scan is not performed as part of the NHS Eye Test but as part of an in-depth eye examination. Using the 3D OCT eye scanner, we examine your sight and the health of your eye. It is a bespoke examination that allows us to monitor images and track any changes more closely over time.
A 3D OCT eye scan is very straightforward and takes just a few seconds. It is completely non-contact, meaning there are no sudden flashes of light or puffs of air. If we see any areas of your eye that appear unusual, the OCT measures them. We can then decide the next steps, monitor you with additional scans, to see if any changes occur over time in your eye, or refer you for further investigation.
