Our Hemp Eyewear provides Sustainable Fairtrade Fashion
At Allegro Optical Opticians we believe in doing the right thing, particularly where our clients are concerned. We are particularly passionate about doing the right thing for our environment and the planet we live on. We believe that we all have a responsibility to be mindful of the choices we make, and aware of the impacts they have.
As we have said before, it’s all about ethics. We try to stock products which are made locally with a low environmental impact. We also like to work with like-minded organisations
such as Holme Valley Fairtrade
, and Social Progress
, so it’s no surprise that we try to support fairandfunky
whenever we can. A community interest company, fairandfunky
is an organisation that empowers people to take little steps to change the world. By delivering workshops for free to community groups and schools fairandfunky
help to make a positive difference. Delivering interactive workshops on 3 key global themes: recycling, the environment and Fairtrade.
Their workshops inform and educate on how we can all live in a kinder and more mindful way. The team advise on how to act, and what to wear. Where to shop and what to do, to live a lower impact lifestyle. Enabling people to make positive choices and empowering them to take little steps to change the world.
Looking after the globe and the global village
During Fairtrade Fortnight 2018 fairandfunky held their second fairandfunky Fairtrade Conference for Secondary Schools
at Honley High School. Allegro Optical were delighted to sponsor the event which saw the school open its doors to Secondary Schools from across Yorkshire. The Conference brought schools together to inspire students and teachers to get involved with Fairtrade
. Something we support wholeheartedly!
So taking all this into account, we were very pleased when fairandfunky
co-founder Sophie Bebb visited us recently for an eye test and some new spectacles.
Needless to say, Sophie didn’t want her new glasses to cost the Earth. So we weren’t surprised when she selected frames from our fabulous new range of Hemp eyewear
. All frames in the range are handmade from organic plant fibres. Making them one of the most sustainable and innovative frames in the market. Handmade in the UK.
When asked about her new glasses Sophie said, “I am delighted that my new hemp glasses, they fit with my own personal brand & looks – sustainable, UK made, durable, ethical & even pretty fashionable! The Allegro team are helpful & friendly – from my eye test to choosing the right frames for me, to fitting my new frames”.
Spectacles and Sustainability
Hemp Eyewear is the result of a university assignment. Looking at the most sustainable material in the world, and to design something with it. Founder, Sam Whitten, discovered the eco-friendly properties of hemp and felt it would be the perfect material to challenge the plastic-dominated eyewear industry. Hemp fibres provide a strong, lightweight frame suited for everyday eyewear.
Organic hemp crops are eco-friendly and much faster-growing than wood and cotton. It can grow almost anywhere in the world, even on poor soil. It takes just 3 months to grow and during the growing process, it requires little water. No pesticides, insecticides or herbicides. While growing Hemp absorbs CO2, it doesn’t cause deforestation and it is biodegradable. Farmers like to use it as a rotational crop to replenish the soil with nutrients.
The team at Hemp Eyewear keep a close eye on the manufacturing process of the frames and the wellbeing of their staff. All the frames are produced in their workshop based in Edinburgh. Allegro Optical popped in for a visit prior to stocking the range. We were delighted by the quality of the craftsmanship. The attention to detail and mindfulness of the sustainability of the frames in production. Where possible all the materials and components that go into the frames have to meet the strong ethical criteria of the founder. All the components are engineered with precision and meet rigorous sustainability practices.
