It doesn’t take much of an excuse for the team at Allegro Optical to start eating chocolate
So when we discovered that it also has eye health benefits it was even better. Because dark chocolate has a higher proportion of cocoa it has a lot of the health benefits. OK dark chocolate is still high in sugar and fat. However eaten in moderation it provides a healthy source of iron, copper, magnesium, fibre, zinc, manganese, and selenium. Cocoa delivers antioxidants, flavonoids and flavones aplenty.
Choosing a dark chocolate with at least 70-80% cocoa is by far the best option, and it provides many eye health benefits.
Studies have shown that some young adults who eat dark chocolate had enhanced visual performance. Some believe that the cocoa in dark chocolate may increase blood flow to the brain and retina. In turn, improving the motion detection and the capability to see letters of low contrast.
Dark chocolate is a healthy source of copper and has been found to help prevent optic nerve damage. The human body only needs to intake a small amount of copper each day. A small serving of dark chocolate contains over half of the recommended daily allowance of copper.
The flavonoids found in dark chocolate can help lower oxidative stress, protecting the eyes optic nerve from damage and in turn sight loss.
Macular degeneration can have devastating effects on vision and it is the main cause of loss of vision in adults over the age of 60. Vitamin A can help protect against macular degeneration. As luck would have it dark chocolate contains levels of Vitamin A due to the cocoa.
